SureLinx and SkyWave Solution Provider, RiverCross Tracking to monitor vehicles during 2010 Rhino Charge.
Ottawa, Canada – May 20, 2010 – Sixty five off-road vehicles roaring through rough Kenyan terrain will be tracked in near real-time by SkyWave Mobile Communications and RiverCross Tracking, a SkyWave Solution Provider, for the 2010 edition of the Rhino Charge off-road vehicle event.
Installed on all participating vehicles and transmitting location, speed and heading information up to every minute, SkyWave’s SureLinx 8100 GPS-enabled dual-mode satellite/cellular communication terminals will not only be used to accurately determine the results of the Rhino Charge race, but will also ensure the safety of competitors in areas where cellular communications do not exist.
RiverCross, a provider of vehicle tracking and fleet management services in East and Central Africa, will provide a control room and a web-based tracking and monitoring solution for Rhino Charge which includes regular updates of vehicle positions and a panic button that will alert air and ground rescue crews of the vehicle’s location in the event of an emergency. RiverCross will also be setting up a public screen at the event where spectators will be able to follow the teams’ progress.
This is the third year that SkyWave and RiverCross have supported the Rhino Charge. The event raises funds for the Rhino Ark Charitable Fund which promotes conservation and sustainable use of the Aberdares habitat, home to one of East-Africa’s most famous rhino and wildlife sanctuaries.
Rhino Charge is a Kenyan off-road event where competitors are required to visit 13 control points scattered over approximately 100 square km of rough terrain within a 10 hour period. The winner is the competitor who visits the most control points in the shortest distance, as determined by GPS. This year’s Rhino Charge event is scheduled to be held on May 31st, 2010.
