GlobalTrack and Xtra-link (www.xtra-link.com) will provide race participants with SkyWave D+ satellite terminals, enabling real-time tracking of race performance and increasing crew safety. SkyWave is the leading global provider of D+ satellite communications. These reliable D+ satellite terminals have been tested in some of the world’s most rugged and challenging environments and are ideally suited for use in challenging offshore boat races. With each vessel equipped with a SkyWave terminal, the crews can rest assured that their position is known and if a mishap were to occur, they can be easily found.
“SkyWave is proud to be a co-sponsor of the 2006 Dubai Muscat Offshore Sailing Race,” said Pui-Ling (Stanley) Chan, CEO and Managing Director of SkyWave. “Together with GlobalTrack, we are pleased to be able to provide a vital communications technology solution to make this year’s race the most successful yet.”
The prestigious 14th annual race is organized by the DOSC, with support by the Ministry of Sports Affairs, the Sultanate of Oman, the UAE Marine Sports Federation and the UAE IRC Owner’s Association. The three to four-day event is a 360-mile classic passage race, taking boats through the famous Straights of Hormuz, from the relatively shallow waters of the Arabian Gulf to the deep waters of the Indian Ocean.
Offshore racing demands specific skills to meet the ever-changing navigational and weather challenges, including navigating both shallow and deep ocean waters and ever-present commercial and leisure marine traffic. Again this year, the i-mate Dubai-Muscat Offshore Sailing Race has drawn interest from sailors, crew and reporters from as far away as America. The race may also be established as a qualifying race on the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) calendar.
“We are delighted to welcome the GlobalTrack and SkyWave satellite solution as an important aspect to the success of this year’s race,” said Paul Dilworth, Principal Race Officer. “Offshore sailing is a very technical, challenging and at times perilous sport. The use of accurate asset tracking technology makes it easier to manage such a high-profile event, and most importantly, ensures the safety of all participants.”
