IEC 60945:2002 is an International Standard that specifies the general requirements, methods of testing, and required test results for maritime navigation and radio communication equipment. This compliance now paves the way for SkyWave Solution Providers to go to market with SSAS solutions integrated with SkyWave’s DMR200L.
In 1998, SkyWave revolutionized the Inmarsat D+ telematics market by releasing the DMR200, the world’s first D+ satellite terminal with an integrated antenna and scripting capability for fixed and mobile asset tracking, monitoring, and control. Since then, SkyWave has manufactured and sold more satellite terminals than any other D+ provider maintaining its leadership position. This announcement follows on SkyWave recording its most successful year in the company’s history. In 2004, SkyWave’s revenue increased by 33% driven by sales increases in terminals and airtime by 36% and 66%, respectively.
SkyWave’s DMR200 D+ satellite terminals and service have been deployed in the marine industry to track, monitor, and control marine-based assets such as fishing fleets, tuna buoys, and ships. Current applications include SSAS and Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS). SkyWave continues to set the standard for D+ with the recent release of its fourth generation DMR200 satellite terminals. The DMR200L recently received Inmarsat Type Approval certifying the terminal to operate down to zero degrees elevation. This, in conjunction with passing the applicable sections of IEC 60945:2002, positions the DMR200L as the premier D+ satellite terminal for the SSAS market.
The DMR200L is the world’s only Inmarsat D+ terminal with a low elevation antenna providing improved signal reception, down to zero degree of elevation, for marine and edge of coverage applications. The DMR200L is suited to a host of applications in locations where the Inmarsat satellites are at a low elevation angle to the terminal or where rough seas reduce the effective satellite elevation. The DMR200L significantly improves performance and reduces lost messages associated with traditional antennas operating in these environments. A typical application for the DMR200L would be tracking the movement and monitoring the security of ships with valuable cargo in remote ocean areas.
Steve Birrell, SkyWave’s Vice President, Sales and Marketing, said, “The SkyWave DMR200L is the world’s most technically advanced D+ satellite terminal available to the maritime industry. Passing the applicable sections of IEC 60945:2002 ensures that the DMR200L will operate reliably and effectively in the stressful conditions of the maritime environment to provide the highest level of mission critical tracking and security for the SSAS market.”
