SkyWave’s field-proven products and services include the flagship DMR-200 series of D+ terminals, which set the industry standard for reliable, burst-messaging communications; the DMR-800D terminal, the latest evolution of the DMR-series terminals combining enhanced features for extended application capability; and the SureLinx 8000 series satellite/GPRS integrated wireless controller for use with dual-mode applications. All products are designed for use with the trusted SkyWave D+ or SkyWave IsatM2M network services and are backed by SkyWave’s industry-leading customer service.

A little bit about the role:
SkyWave currently has a fulltime permanent opening for Technical Support Engineers to provide 2nd and 3rd level technical assistance to our international customers. Work will be primarily focused on immediate customer challenges and needs – collecting symptoms of customer concerns, analyzing and reproducing problems, and implementing fixes and/or workarounds to minimize inconvenience to customers.  Generally serves as a first point of contact of technical support for emergency situations involving the failure or company products or systems. Owns problem until its resolution and is required to provide proper reporting progress and results during process. Will collaborate with engineering team to replicate and analyze complex technical issues requiring product redesign to mitigate the risk of reoccurrence.  

Additionally, the successful incumbent will be responsible for customer application implementation review and certification.  They will work on a team responsible for satellite terminal programming using our proprietary scripting language and will participate in the development of tools to assist customers in the development of satellite based solutions. They will also participate in the development and presentation of training seminars.  

Work is generally of a critical and time sensitive nature. Must use considerable independent judgment and initiative to resolve problems and make recommendations, determining when and if further action is required, and will supply a recommendation where appropriate. Researching issues, analyzing problems, determining approaches, compiling data and preparing reports are part of everyday functions. Interfacing with and coordinating activities between various departments and outside parties is required. Will be responsible to refer routine matters to appropriate parties and follow up to ensure proper disposition.

The successful incumbent will have a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering.  Preference will be given to candidates with 1-2 years experience in an application engineering/ technical support role. Due to the international nature of the company’s business, this position requires flexible irregular working hours and the ability to travel up to 25% of the time. A combination of strong creative/analytical skills and an aptitude for troubleshooting and debugging will ensure success in this role. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following:
- Internet Protocol
- Low level serial protocol
- Satellite communications
A high degree of proficiency all MS Office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) is required as is the ability to take difficult customer problems and turn them into positive resolutions. The ability to develop and deliver detailed technical presentations for customer training and other purposes is also required.

The position requires meticulous attention to detail and the ability to deal with constantly changing requirements and priorities.  Superior organizational skills and outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with all levels of Executive/Senior clients and staff are a must.  Preference will be given to candidates who are multilingual (English and Mandarin or Cantonese preferred) with exposure to Asian business environments.

Candidates must be legally able to work in Brunei, be available to relocate to Ottawa, Ontario Canada for a minimum one-year assignment and have the ability to pass all visa and work permit requirements for Canada. Given the international nature of this role, flexible work hours and the ability to travel are required.
